WHAT WE DID

Shock Surplus had a vision of how their website should work the best for their customers, and they collaborated with PB+J team to redesign the store. We worked together with the design agency to customize the Year-Make-Model search.

First, the Year-Make-Model lookup acquired a new behavior. Usually, YMM lookup looks like a selector with several dropdowns. On the Shock Surplus website, users need to click on “Select Your Vehicle“, and the dialog window with dropdowns appears.

The autocomplete search also got an upgrade. When the user starts typing a query inside the search box, several word suggestions appear. By clicking on a word, product suggestions also dynamically change inside the search box.

Shock Surplus website has a single-vehicle Garage version. So, when the user clicks a “Reset“ button, the vehicle is reset on all website pages.

If users scroll the home page down, they will find the standard Year-Make-Model widget on the banner image.

Another advancement is depicting extra information inside the product cards in search results, e.g. “In stock”, or “Length Options”. This data is pulled from Shopify metafields.

The Shock Surplus team asked us to change the way search results usually look on mobile. The “Filters” and “Sort by“ buttons were moved to the bottom of the display. The filter panel got all categories options open, while usually they are minimized.

New parts brands are created, new Makes appear, and manufacturers provide catalogs with insufficient product data - all these are the reasons that the most detailed complete fitment database doesn’t exist. And it’s okay, auto parts stores don’t need perfect fitment data to perform well.

The Shock Surplus website doesn’t have “Drive Type“ fitment information for every vehicle. This issue was resolved by adding an “Any” option inside a dropdown. But the word “Any” is hidden from the selection, and only the Year, Make and Model showed inside Garage.

Also, until all dropdowns are selected and the search button is clicked, the product results don’t change.
